- The Portes du Soleil region covers twelve ski resorts and is perhaps the largest area of linked skiing in the Europe, if not the world, starting with Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz.
- The Grand Massif region has 5 resorts with Morillon, Samoens, Flaines, Les Carroz, Sixt
Both regions are accessible in only 15 minutes from our village. However, we have
yet to fully explore all this skiing because our own village has over 50km of dazzlingly
beautiful, family friendly skiing in an extensive uncrowded resort called Sommand
which is linked through to the high altitude resort of Praz des Lys. The variety
of scenery and views keeps drawing us back.
Why Sommand - Praz de Lys
This is fabulous skiing, on unspoiled runs that spread out over several mountain sides and forest trails and beg to be discovered. At times you will feel like you have the place to yourself. The resort remains a well guarded secret known only to local Alpine families and the nearby Swiss. So far it has escaped the mass tourism of the resorts next door. Service is personal, with a focus on families and the skiing offers plenty of choice at all levels.
All skiing levels catered for
Private ski tuition and ski schools are all available. For absolute beginners there is a newly installed ski tow known as “the magic carpet” (“tapis magique”) which provides small children with a safe start at Sommand. The main lift, restaurants and facilities are all easily accessible from your car which makes lift tickets, restaurants and ski hire can all be done within a few metres unlike the mass market resorts where increasingly large hotels, shops and queues dominate and get in the way.

controlled. As a result the area is very popular for both cross country skiers and

Afterwards, back at the chalet, children can enjoy more outdoor freedom, go sledging, make snowmen, and explore the tree house. For yourself, we recommend a selection of the world famous cheeses from the village cheese shop, which go well with the local wines while curled up in front of the log fire.
